Be Still

"Be still and know that I am God."
~Psalm 46:10a

Why do we confess our sins if we are already forgiven?

Confessing sin is not only about asking for forgiveness, but it is about acknowledging what you've done wrong, conceding that He is right and agreeing with God that you'll work to avoid doing it again.

1 John 1:9 states: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (NIV)

Notice that there is an "If" statement involved. It is conditional. "If we confess our sins, he. . . will forgive us our sins." Forgiveness does not come without repentence or confession.

The word "confess" comes from the same Hebrew word that we translate into "praise". When we confess our sins, we are praising God for His righteousness and admitting to Him that His way is the right and holy way. Being contrite in your heart, and appreciating your failures is a way of praising the Lord.
